Checking Out A New Pet Boarding Facility

Dogs are NOT humans. While a kennel doesn't seem like the best place for a human to stay, try to get inside the head of a dog. Domestic dogs will voluntarily seek out an area like a cage or under a coffee table or some type of enclosed area.

And, once again, keep in mind that dogs are NOT humans. Ever think how dogs feel in an area where there are a lot of humans talking?

I've also heard people say, "I can't board my dog in a kennel. And, once again, keep in mind that dogs are NOT humans. Ever think how dogs feel in an area where there are a lot of humans talking?

There is nothing like an in person visit. Go and make an appointment in person to check out the facilities your pet may be staying at. Ask for a tour, including where your pet will be spending most of the time at their facilities.

Check that they observe safety and the location is free of toxins and toxic chemicals. Note if they use kennels, the size and if it is an appropriate size for your pet to move about freely.

Ask if there are rules on unspayed or neutered dogs. Ask if they are flexible on drop off and pick up times and can you find and call out about your pet during their stay.

You can always try doggy day care for a day just to see how your pet handles being away from you.

This post comes from a fellow dog lover and long-time friend Adam Jones who is no stranger to boarding his pets as he goes on vacation at least once per year!

5 Things to Do When Boarding Your Dog

Before you use the dog boarding facility, tour it. This is a very important measure to ensure you are leaving your dog in a place you feel comfortable with.

The best facilities will allow you to tour at any time and not just at specific times when they know they will be presenting their best self to you. You want to see the facility as it will be when your dog will be staying there.

On the tour, take note of the dogs currently being boarded. Do they have their blankets? Do they have lots of water down for them to drink? Do they look too hot or too cold? If they are small dogs, do they have their portable kennels to go in?

Are The Dogs Getting To Play With Their Toys?

Also, look above and around the dog's area to see if anything is being withheld from them. For instance, is their blanket or toy on a shelf above their kennel? If it is, ask the staff if they are getting ready to clean out the kennels or if they have just cleaned the kennels. Often times they store the blankets and toys as they clean. If the answer is no, then the dogs may not be getting their blankets and toys, and that is something to consider before you use their facility.

Lastly, check to see how the staff to dog ratio looks. There should be at least 1 person on staff for every 20 dogs. That ensures that each dog gets the attention they need for safety and comfort.
